Shern- loving to learn

Saturday, August 28, 2010

I think it's only normal that when a younger sibling came along, the older one gets next to no attention. In my case, that's because a baby needs so much more attention and care when Shern can take care of himself so well.

He can clean himself after he poops, shower himself (clean or not, that's another story la), entertain himself, read story books by himself, does his own homework, but the only thing he needs my attention when he does his Kumon worksheet. I think it is because, with Kumon, the worksheet is all repetition, maybe after a page or two, it gets boring so he started to wander elsewhere for more fun things to do. Aikss...

He's a very bright kid, reads relatively well, and he mastered the suku kata very well though the kindy only started the 5yo on Bahasa Malaysia subject this year.

Before you started thinking that I'm putting too much pressure on my 4years 8 months old son, it was his own idea to start Kumon, after seeing his cousins in Kumon class. He took up Maths subject back in January, and since then has been bugging me to let him take up English. His tutor told him that when the time is right, he will let Shern starts his English. So last week, when his tutor called and told me that Shern might be ready to take an extra subject, Shern was overjoyed. He went,"YEAH! I can start Kumon English!"

Then only I realised why he's so looking forward to his English class, that's because in his Kindy, the teacher teaches them to read the Fitzroy Reader series, one on one. One day, when he came back from school, he told me that Cass, his girlfriend, is now on Book 10, the best reader in class, he's the second best, on book 8.

And you know why, quote "because the principle is Cass's aunty, and everyday she'll bring the book back home for Cass to read, that's why Cass is so clever in reading". But sounds to me like my son is the competitive one here. He "boh kam wan". He even asked me to go buy all the 60 books back for him to read. LOL. This type of kiasu-ness in learning, I so love it. Keep it up, darling.

Maybe mom can register you for the online military degrees course, just to guarantee you a place when you need it.

Hey, my Tessa is like that too! She is damn kiasu and competitive, I don't need to chase her to do work, she wants to do it herself. And when she does well, people always ask me, what did I do with her revision, actually I did nothing (lazy Mama, no time also, got baby ma!) and she has done all her revision herself.....We are lucky Moms!

It was very interesting for me to read this post. Thanks for it. I like such topics and everything connected to this matter. I would like to read a bit more on that blog soon.
